I Just Traded My 240 in for a V70.... V70-XC70

Hello All,

I just traded my 89 240 in for a 99 V70, NA engine and fwd. So far, its been a little over a week, I really love this car. It has 50,000 miles on it, and the previous owner seemed to take excellent care of it. Unfortunately, I do not have all of its' past service records, and this bothers me a little. But, so far, so good... Anyway, I was an avid reader of the 240 forum, but am a newbie to the V70 and FWD/AWD forums, and I was wondering what people think in general of this car. I've seen a few troubling posts about electrical issues. Is this a big problem in the V70 series as a whole? What about engine and transmission issues. Do you all feel this family of engines is as "reliable" as those of years past? I appreciate any opinions/input, this iis the first non-240 that I have owned, and so far I like it alot.

Thanks,
Mike

I traded my '89 240DL sedan last October for a V70 2.4 auto no turbo, premium and cold weather packages. The old manual was fun to drive, but my V70 holds more, gets better mileage, and is a much better drive. So far 10,000 miles (three oil changes) and absolutely zero problems. My old had several teething problems that all got solved once I quit using the dealer service department, the new one has yet to need any service other than fluid changes.

I did it nearly two years ago. A 90 245 for an 01 V70, 5 speed na. There are times when I regret it, but they are few. Love going uphill without rowing, the flat corners, and I'm getting the same or better gas mileage. Two hours north of you.

Congratulations on your new ride. I think I have read that the '99 and '00 model years are a little better than the '98- just like the '96 and '97 850 was better than the '93 and so on. My crystal ball indicates that the five cylinder models will last as long as the four cylinder models but because of a higher level of complexity, will cost more in the process.

In my opinion, the 98-2000 N/A S/V 70 were the most trouble free of the front wheel drive offerings.

HA ! ! ! I did the same , 89 240 for a 98 awd.i feel you worry bro... but in 12000 kilometers, only a door actuator switch for $ 170 cdn compared to the same unit in a 98 concord for $35( or so I was quoted). lets keep our timing belts crossed... These 2 bricks cannot be compared huh? Den

You'rrrre going to regret doing that. Best look another part-time job for the repair bills.

I am thinking of doing the same thing, but perhaps keep the 240. Do you mind telling me what you paid and what part of the world you're in?

      Torque-
I paid around 16000 for it. I'm in the Boston Mass area. It was a struggle to reach the decision to finally lay my beloved 240 down. But like I said, I am really enjoying my V70.

Just keep your eye on the BB, try to make as many repairs yourself as you can within your ability, find a good mailorder source for parts (Nils Sefeldt, Tasca Volvo in RI) Keep up the service intervals. Find the nearest AutoZone, they do free Check Engine Light scans to help you diagnose problems.

Battery, Secondary Air System Pump, Door Locks and thermostat are common problems. Even with these issues, I still love my car, its fast, powerful for such a small engine (almost 100 hp per liter) and a blast to drive.
