pnp replacement without alignment tool!!! is it possible??? 850

my volvo dealer can't get hold of the pnp alignment tool for 3 weeks!!! but he has got the pnp switch can i replace the switch without the tool in any way???

maybe mark the positon of the old one before removing it???

any ideas??

    I did mine with no alignment tool. The only reason for the alignment tool is to make sure that you don't rotate the PNP shaft out of sync with the shifter location. Mark it if it makes you feel better. Better yet when you pull the shift arm off the shaft rotate the shaft to the right or left and count the clicks so you know where it was in the first place. I was just careful not to turn the shaft, but an ounce of prevention is called for here (Hey Dad! Watch! This thing spins like a top!).

    Thats how I did it. I actually made up a tool thinking that I might need it but in the process of replacing the pnp switch the position of the switch with relation to the cable was so obvious I didn't use the tool.

    If I remember right there is a mark on the pnp switch case that the switch lever has to line up with when the transmission is in neutral. I eyeballed it and had no problems.

    It is doable. I came across some brickers in this board who did the replacement without the alignment tool. Dealer should be able to do without the tool.
