MPG...19/33 850 1997

Around town I average 19 with 1/2 hwy and city, and from a run to Phoenix last summer, my mileage indicator read 33mpg averaging 75mph for the 1500 mile run.

A European (Irish) perspective. 850 1997

Over here in Ireland, I get about 400 miles to a tank full of petrol (gas) That works out at 31 miles per gallon, or about 26 miles per US gallon, because the imperial gallon is 20 fluid ounces, whereas the US gallon is only 16 fluid ounces. Also the roads here are narrow, twisty and hilly, and not really suitable for speeds greater than 40 MPH. I'm curious about your quoted highway speed of 75 MPH average? Do you not have a speed limit on your roads?

Re: Euro......... 850 1997

Here in California we have 65 MPH speed limit. Average speed on the freeway is between 60-80 MPH. Cool huh!! Any slower and you will cause an accident. On straight long open strips of highway (i.e. Interstate 15 from San Diego to Las Vegas)I think the speed limit is closer to 75 but it is basically like an autobahn. Middle of the desert, no where for the little piggies to hide!!!

First off- my car is a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo sedan.

I drive the hell out of it- lots of acceleration.

In city I get 15-18 MPG. Highway I get 22-27MPG.

I have two 1996 850 GLT wagons with 5 speed manuals. I average with city and highway driving between 22 to 25 mpg. On the highway going a steady 70 mph I'll get 27 to 28 mpg.

Keep in mind that, when you say city & highway mixed, it can mean a range of average driving speed. I thought I had about 60/40 highway/city driving for the commute, but when I checked average mph after a normal commuting day, the avg mph was barely over 25. I would've guessed at least 35, since there are stretches of local highway where I can do >60, but looking back, for the 30 min commute, I don't spend 20 min on the highway. So, even if the 'distance' I cover on the highway is ~60%, that doesn't translate to the number I had in my mind.

Also, make sure you don't have a long idle time. I idle often, especially on weekends, when kids sleep in the back. That easily make my number go down to sometimes below 18. Btw, I have a '96 855t, ~70k miles.

Perhaps it'd be more helpful if we started comparing avg mph vs. mpg. Just a thought.

MPG & how can I find error on O2 sensor? Who is the culprit? 850 1993

I have '93 850 with 121k miles.

I get 19.5 mpg in winter and 21 in summer, all city driving. Highway is around 23 or 24. It is not very encouraging nor fun and I am a bit ticked off. I would rather conserve energy.

I warm the car up, once a day, for 2-3 minutes in winter and 1-2 minutes in summer.

I do decent maintenance (oil, trans fluid, coolent, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter). Since the distributor or the thermostat are not bad and spark plug cables looks good I have not replaced them.

Mr. Wayne mentioned about O2 sensor. How can I find out if the O2 sensor is the culprit and why? If not then who is the culprit?

Ronjon

Same car as you, 850 GLT N/A, auto, 80k. I get about 20-22 in some combination of city and highway miles. I've seen a low of 17-18, and a high of 25-26 at various times.

Mileage sounds low. I was getting around 25 with my NA 850, now around 22 and change in the winter with my S70 T5. Has the O2 sensor ever been replaced?
