Vacuum pump runs constantly? S40-V40

Today is the second time that I have heard the vacuum pump(located in the LF fender)running hours after the car is parked. I am concerned that this will kill the battery. I just had the car to the dealer last week for a 60,000 mile service. Nothing was found that was related.

Anyone else have this problem? More importantly, anyone know the solution?

count my 2000 S40 in this category as well. Just started last week, took the fuse out, car runs perfectly, have no idea what the pump is there for.

This may be a silly question, but why does a gas vehicle need a vacuum pump? What exactly would the vacuum need to operate? The only vehicles that I'm aware of that have vacuum pumps are diesels.

Well, you may have answered my question before I even got to ask it...but just to verify.

I went out to my car this morning (after it was parked for 12+ hours) and I heard a pump running. The strange thing is, I had gone out to my car a few minutes after I parked it last night and do not remember hearing anything. Also, my battery was fine, and I imagine it would have been dead if it had really been running for 12 hours.

Let me know what you think. I'm going to try to get it to the dealer asap to avoid the dead battery scenario.

    Thanks!

Next time it happens, pull the fuse for the vacuum pump. If that is what is running, it will stop. The fuse(on a 2000 S40) is in the fusebox located under the hood. The lid to the fusebox has a "layout" showing what each fuse is for.

      I hope this helps.

Probably a stuck relay. Yes, it will kill your battery. The relay is attached to the pump mounting bracket. The pump/bracket/relay/pressure sensor is located behind the plastic fender liner ahead of the left front wheel.
