If you really want to improve your lighting.... V70-XC70

....you have to start by getting E-code lenses (European spec, an E in a circle will be embossed on the lens). It's the most important improvement you can make, you MUST start here. E-codes focus most of their light on the road, unlike the US DOT standard which transmits 100% of its light as a vague fuzzy glow....and 50% of THAT is aimed over the horizon and into the trees. Should cost about $125 each side, changeout takes about ten minutes.

Once you have these, you can upgrade to European spec halogens (Philips VisionPlus or Hella LightPower, 50% more output). You can get the Philips from Autolamps Online.com or the Hella from Susquehanna Motorsports (#78119, they call them "premium" at Susquehanna but they're the LightPower).

This combination will be a vast improvement over what you've got.

Add good foglights for a wider sweep of light for cornering. The OEM fogs are very good, though I had to modify mine because they didn't mount in the airdam properly. Hella MicroDE's are truly phenomenal, probably the best fog pattern on the market - available at Susquehanna Motorsports. I used the OEM Volvo switch and n0v8or's instructions to allow my foglights to work independently. The foglight wiring circuit is already in the car.

If you have $400+ to spend, you could upgrade to HID. To be legal in the US, HIDs have to be be behind Ecode lenses, as do the premium +50% halogens.
