Ok, vac hose under the battery is ok, but cruise control not working - any other iseas? S70 1998

I have checked the hose under the batter without removing the battery, but rather sticking my hand down there and feeling my way around. I felt the hose and it felt very solid and pliable (no cracks or signs of dryness). It was also connected to its fitting. The cruise control does not engage. I looked at the fuse and it is ok. A realy, perhaps? Anyone in the know, please help.

Thanks.

after you've thoroughly checked the most likely cause, if it still doesn't work, know that CC is disabled if OBD II finds a(n unrelated) fault (ie, lack of brake lights).

Wow! Really? Interesting information. I have no "Check Engine" light, only the stupid "Service" light, which I am not willing to pay money to shut off. I also do not have any other indications of any other faults... Good to know though.

Thanks!

Vladimir,
My problem was a poor electrical connection to the vacuum pump. Try removing the connector and spraying the pins and sockets whth a contact cleaner, (I used WD40) then connect and disconnect it a few times to wipe the contacts. You will need to remove the battery and tray to do this. Then you will be able to closer examine the vacuum line to be sure there are no breaks. Others have said that the hard plastic line gets cracks that difficult to see.
Good Luck,

Thanks, I will check the electrical connection. What is this vacuum pump for? Is it specifically for the cruise control? I will grudgingly remove the battery and will poke around under the tray for real this time. I thought I could take a short cut, but...

Thanks for the input!

Vladimir,

Remove the battery.

The vacuum line is hard tubing and more than likely has a hole or two in it.

I've had this problem twice on my ride. The condition seems to be caused by electrolyte expelled when I've overcharged the battery.

It's also a good opportunity to clean and protect the battery connections.

Bryan

I have removed the battery. I saw no evidence of any damage to the hard plastic line - it looks like new. I have had no battery acid spils and my battery terminals also look like new. Everything looked great under the tray. I unplugged the electrical connector and plugged it in again repeating this a few times to eliminate the chance of the gummed up contcts, but I could see that the contacts were nice and shiny and clean. I also checked the OBDII port with my generic scanner, which found no codes (makes sence - the Check Engine was not on), but I went through the procedure to clear the code memory anyway. Cruise control still does not engage. What gives? I think I will have to take the car in for service under extended VIP warranty. I hate doing this because the car usually comes back with some other issue and they charge me $50 for it. I am out of ideas, though, so I may have to take it in.

Thanks everyone for input.

Thanks, Bryan for the advice. I really wanted to avoid having to remove the battery, but it looks like I'll have to. I never got any electrolyte spillage and the battery and its posts look nice and clean. I probably was feeling the wrong tube, since you say it's hard plastic and what I was feeling was a flexible rubber hose. Oh, well, I'll try again.

Thanks again, I'll post the results as I have them.

Cheers!
