Pollen filter retro fit! 850

Dear All

This is a great site! I am wondering if it is possible to fit a 'pollen filter kit' from a lhd to a rhd car. I know the rule of thumb is that it is fitted the opposite side to the fuse box. As I look under the hood of my '93 850 the fuse box is on the left near the windscreen, is this the same side as a lhd car? Can I then fit a pollen filter kit to my car?

My local Volvo Dealer is uninterested and says that if one was not fitted when the car was made then don't bother fitting one now!!

Thanks
Matt

Pollen filter retro fit! 850

Matt,

I have a 97 850 and the kit was added. It looks like the fit you propose will work if the shape of the opening is the same, but flipped/mirrored. The hole is a sort of rectangle with the inboard side convex rather than straight. Open up your cowling over the heater fan and check. If you don't know how to do that check the directions on the Bosch filters site below.

http://www.bosch.de/aad/en/produkte/filter/innenraum/einbauorte.htm

then click:

Installation locations according to
vehicle models

then click: 850

I think you will get what you are after. Do note that the holder for the filter just presses into place on top of a large flexable gasket that lines the hole over the heater fan motor.

Good luck, I think it is very "do able".

Kele'

PS Mann makes a filter for this as well.

try to find a new local volvo dealer, but be warned: filters for the kit that was originally developed for 850s are no longer available, and filters which fit the newer kit suck compared to the electrostatically-charged originals. There is also a fancy/expensive activated charcoal filter element available for the newer kits, but it is too restrictive. Thus I've been forced/reduced into making my own filters by buying and chopping up a 3M Filtrete home furnace filter and stuffing/gluing it into a new-style plastic filter frame (filter with filtering material ripped out) -- a real pain in the butt (thanks again, Volvo).

There might be a lh-rh difference in the shape of the opening onto which the filter housing mounts, in which case you would need to get a kit specifically made for rhd.
