60k or 65k service questions V70-XC70

My brother has a 98 V70 non turbo and needs the big service interval done. Is that at 60 or 65k, I can't remember. He was quoted $700 something at the Volvo dealer in Ann Arbor, MI. Swedish Engineering gave me a quote of $300 for brake fluid change, anifreeze change, new spark plugs, new fuel filter, oil change. They said they don't change the tranny fluid until it is dark. That seems like a pretty crappy maintainance tactic. Should he get the timing belt replaced now to be safe? I think the timing belt is good for 70k but the car is getting 5+ years old so that hurts rubber just as bad as the miles. Swedish Engineering gave me a quote of $160 for a tranny flush and $200 for a timing belt. Is this reasonable? Is there any other things my brother should look at getting done?

Yeah, I'd take it to Swedish Engineering. They do a great job and really know what they're doing. I just had the 150K service on my '94 855 Turbo there today. They did the timing belt and the accessory belt too. Also, they replaced a broken motor mount while they were in there. If they find it they'll let you know. I've found them to be quite honest.

Swedish has never been too with it on the tranny service. They will just drain and refill (not flush). You can get a flush kit from IPD and do the tranny service yourself. They give great instructions with it.

Definitly don't take it to Sesi. They are real hacks. Took my '98 V70 T-5 there this week and they left a turbo duct disconnected when they replaced the top engine stabilizer bushing. I also discovered that they didn't tighted the bolt on the bushing enough.

    Good luck

    60k or 65k service questions V70-XC70

The Sweedish Engineering prices seem pretty good to me. The timing
belt is about $45 and the rest is labor. The price listed is about
what others have reported paying (a range might be $160 to $280
depending on the cost of labor in your area).

If he is at 65K might as well replace the timing belt when the other
60K service is done. I have 66K on my 98 T5 (purchased in april of 97)
and will be replacing it soon, too.

Since brake pads last about 30K and rotors about 2 sets of pads
I would expect that there would also be some brake work. Figure $200
for parts (front rotors and front pads) plus an hour labor.

I would also have the tranny fluid flushed. My wife has a 95 850 wagon
and we had the tranny fluid flushed at 50K. I was surprised at what a
difference it made in the shifting (very smooth now).

The 60,000 mile (96,000 km in my case)service is an expensive one. You also should replace the serpentine belt, air filter and cabin filter at this point.

I replaced my timing belt at 112,000 km (70,000 miles) as recommended in the manual. The timing belt still had good teeth, but it had alot of cracks from engine heat. I would not let this service go beyond the 70,000 mile mark. The timing belt was a three hour job by my local mechanic who is not a Volvo specialist (a good solid mechanic he is).
