any opinions about adding a rear spoiler to a 99 V70 R. I recently got the car and the rear window seams to need constant wiping in any rain, especially at highway speed. Would the spoiler help this?

The spoiler was the second item I installed on the car, I thought that it would keep the rain down but it doesn't, it helps a little with the dust. The best thing is that it looks neat. It doesn't attract the police as it is still a wagon. Even though mine has IPD bars, 225 45R 16 Kumos and cross drilled rotors and EBC Greenstuff pads on all for corners.

I just installed my spoiler last night. It went on fairly easily. You'll need T-25 and T-30 torx bits, and be careful not to strip any bolts. I suggest you have a second pair of hands available for the final mounting, so as not to drop the wing on top of the car.
I haven't had a chance to drive the car in the rain yet, as it's July, and summertime here in Seattle. The rain will pick up again in a couple weeks when summer is over ;-)
If this wing performs anything like the airfoil wing on my Grand Cherokee, it will do wonders in the rain. I've had the wing on my Grand for 10 years now, and have only used the rear wiper less than a dozen times, mostly to wipe snow off the glass.
Have you ever noticed on minivans and SUVs that have the rear wiper, during the rainy periods many will develop the "shark's fin" on the back glass, from using the rear wiper. This wing should make a significant difference in the amount of rain and roadspray that develops on the back glass, so you shouldn't have to use the rear wiper as often, if at all. A coat of rain-x sure helps too.

Curious if your was the Volvo spoiler? I just painted one from IPD (Portland OR) and they only suggest this glue? And might you know how to get just the bracket kit for the spoilers? Dealer will not seperate them..thanks

Yes, I bought the Volvo spoiler which uses adhesive tape (on the glass portion) in addition to the metal mounting brackets which attach to the existing hinge bolts.
It's too bad IPD didn't supply the mounting brackets, but then again, I would guess they didn't design the spoiler with the corresponding bolt-holes to attach to?
The adhesive only method of mounting the spoiler kind of worries me, but if that's the way IPD sells it, hopefully that stuff will not break loose any time soon.

My '98 V70 R has a rear spoiler. It does not seem to keep rain off except at very high speed (100 MPH (+)), and even then it has minimal impact. Rain-X works. It does help with the dust though, and looks great. An aerodynamics wizard told me it helps with airflow, but does not add much downforce.

Also have an '88 Mercury Colony Park wagon that came with an airfoil of sorts from the factory which is a part of the roof rack. There is no rear wiper, but the rear window doesn't get as filthy as the Volvo's. So I'd have to think the wings probably do help. The Ford airfoil looks like it cost the company about $3 per unit, I recall the Volvo wing costs a bit more than that!
When ordered my car, the fog lights and spoiler were options bundled together. I passed on the factory option, and added the fog lights after the car was delivered.
Since I need to drive a lot and I like to drive fast, the very last thing I would ever want is a car that stands out of the crowd.
I want one that makes me invisible!
So I'd like something that keeps the rear window clean, just not something that makes the car look racier!
I do apply Rain-X from time to time.

I must say I like to drive fast as well, I was up in NY state last week with this car and after a late dinner out I was heading back to my motel up RT 9G and this car just inspired me to pass the hotel and cruise north up this winding
deserted highway at 50- 80 depending on the amount of civilzation nearby, I drove for about 30 minutes, cd cranking, sunroof open, it was great.
I like the understated growl of this engine when you stomp on it too,

probably won't help with the rain. however, volvo "advertises" adding a rear roof spoiler helps with keeping the "tire spray" from coming up onto the window.

Having had rear spoilers on both my 98 and 2001 V70s: Probably will not help the rain and wiping needs very much but, but it looks way cool! I personally think the spoiler is a small price to pay to have your wagon stand out and not look like the typical "family car" stereotype.
Thanks, Thomas

I bought one about a year ago off EBay for my '98 V70R...it doesn't keep the water off, but it does keep the dust down. And, it really does change the look of the car.
