Photo: cut vaccuum hose I need to replace - suggestions? 850 1994

Here is a photo of my engine with an arrow indicating the cut vaccuum hose that I need to replace - I think it goes from the flame trrap to the oil trap. Do I have to remove the exhaust manifold or can I reach the oil trap some other way?

Thanks for any detailed help!

I believe that hose has been recalled. Check service campaign 69 A & B. Neither Volvo or my dealer will tell me why or what would happen if the part failed because that's "internal information" :-)

Have a dealer check the campaigns (my dealer was not aware of them and only after I called Volvo directly did they find it) There is also a service manager bulletin 27-13 that I'm told makes dealers aware of them.

They should perform the recall work for free. While it should have been done back in '95, I'm having mine done on Tuesday.

I did call Volvo about this and they said my car (accoring to the VIN) was not included in that campaign as it was made after they regcinized the problems with the original hose and my car was made with the correct hose. The problem is that a previous owner cut it purposely, likely to releive crakcase pressure which may be the result of the dirty flame trap which i have replaced... but anyway no free replacement for me!

      Hey Mark

      What exactly do they change?

Would love to hear how you got on at your dealers.

        RE: recall (service campaign) 69B.

Just had the service done at 120K mi. (along with a rear main seal). This service should have been done in '95 when the bulletin came out, but somehow my car got missed.

The parts replaced were the crankcase vent hose and the vacuum hose to the flame trap. The vacuum hose was cracked, brittle and completely clogged. The crankcase vent hose was crispy and just fell apart upon removal, as I'm told. Both hoses as I understand are upgraded parts which means to me that the original were inadequate. Also the breather box on the block which the vent hose connects to was partially blocked and restricted to the size of his finger (he just cleaned this instead of replacing it as I requested)

BTW the rear main seal is also an upgraded part.

I'm now considering writing a letter to Volvo and my dealer because I don't think I should have to pay for all of the problems that resulted from the failure to do the recall service.

        Hope this helps.

It was a campaign, not a recall and no one is likely to just know about it as dealers havent done that one since '94. It might not be current or relavent anymore but if it is, a dealers service writer or parts department could run DCS with your VIN and see if it's still an opened campaign.

All that was done was that that hose was replaced (to my recollection) and possibly re-routed from its original location. It's a PCV hose so if it's not been done by now and you're not having any PCV related problems, it's not a big deal.

Also, not all '94 850s got that campaign, it wasn't that common (we only did a few back then). Chances are good that most '94s that needed it have already had it done by now.

Just a little clarification for fellow brickboarders. I am told by Volvo that service campaigns are the same as recalls except that recalls are for safety reasons.

Service campaigns are recalls, they just don't relate to safety.

It can be replaced w/o removing the INTAKE manifold but why? That's a hard plastic PCV hose which doesn't normally go bad. The two rubber end hoses at each end of that can also be replaced separately if need be. If it's cracked in the middle, it can also be mended using a rubber hose and clamps.
