Alpine MP3 changer + Noobie stuff.... S70

Hello All... Just wanted to let you all know that I just installed the Alpine CHA-S634 MP3 Change in to my S70. I still have the Factory Radio (SC-816). I used the VOLIL Interface from Crutchfield ($50) and the Alpine KCA-130B (Ai-NET to M-BUS Adapter). I had some MP3 cd's laying around and I tried it out. Works great... (after you switch the mode switch on the Changer).. hehe. None the less, The SC-816 only goes up to track #99 does anyone know if this is a limitation of the SC-816? Am I going to have to limit my MP3 CD's to 99 tracks?

e-mail me if you have any answers on that.

P.S. I just bought my 2000 S70 GLT SE from a friend, only had 36,000 miles on it. I love this car. I just joined tonight and looking forward to help from all.

I don't think it goes above 99 tracks. I have a 2000 GLT-SE and my head unit plays mp3 burned cd's as well the aftermarket Alpine Changer I put in the glove box. You must have alot of short songs and at low bit rate to need more than 99.

52500 Miles and no major problems.

      Oak,
The Head Unit will not display over 99 songs however, it will play songs over number 99 on random.. I Generally get between 130 to 150 songs on disk with all being at least 192 bit rate, but I could see it being under 99 at like 320 or something.

is it the stock head unit? It actually plays MP3 files (not just audio files burned from MP3s)? Can anyone else confirm this? If so, does anyone know if the new Volvos do the same thing? Geez, this may put another reason on my list to trade up to an S60 in the near future.

The Alpine CHA-S634 changer will decode the MP3 disks. The changer can be operated with any of the Volvo head unit that support a CD changer. You will need the adapter plugs that were mentioned in the opening thread. You won't need to upgrade your Volvo to enjoy your MP3 disks.

Oak stated that both his head unit AND the changer play MP3s. I'm trying to find out if this is true. Can anyone confirm this???

None of the stock volvo head units can play MP3s. They can read standard burned CD's that have files in the .cda format, but not in the .mp3 format. I believe Oak was burning off .mp3 files, but many software programs will convert the .mp3 files to .cda on the fly. That would explain why he was surprised you can fit more than 99 .mp3 songs on to one disk. The stock head unit can control the Alpine CD changer which can read .mp3 files. So the stock head unit can only control a MP3 changer, not play mp3 format its self.

That's what I figured (regarding his confusion), just wanted to make sure. Thanks.

    Pugsly-
Yeah, I have the same setup, basically you can only physically move around to 99 songs, however if you have more and are on random it will play tracks over 99 - basicaly I only use random, but when I know I've hit a track over 99 (put my albums together numbered from 1- whatever) just unhit the random button and then you can manuver around.. so like song 124 would show up like 23 or something along those lines.... Let me know if you find a way to random amoung all 6 disks at once.. Havn't been able to figure that one out yet.. I think it is something that is just lost between the Ai-NET to M-Bus switchover..
