TRACS OFF and ABS light coming on........ V70-XC70 1998

Anyone have an idea why the TRACS OFF and ABS lights would come on for a 20-minute drive home last night, but then be off this morning?

I do know that the rear brake pads have only about 1/2 inch pad left on them. But I didn't think that would cause those 2 warning lights to come on.

Thanks in advance for the advice,
Tony

Bad ABS module is a notorious problem for 1998 model year. You should have this possibility checked out by someone who knows their way around Volvos, because there is no diagnostic code for 'bad ABS module.' The problem is the pc board cracks. A new replacement part can be had for $416 dealer, $358 internet. If you're handy with tools, you can save $150+ labor. A brickboard poster here named Vitor can sometimes fix them, too. (Do a search from the drop down menu). But first, make sure this is the problem.

Yes, it's the ABS module, mine was changed free of charges 2 years after the warranty expired. Volvo Europe informed me that the ABS module was a safety sensible issue and would replace at any time, even out of warranty! So have a chat with your dealer.

      Cheers

      René

        Rene,

Thank you very much for the response. When you mention Volvo Europe, are you saying that you are based in Europe? Is there a difference between Volvo Europe and the U.S.? Just want to make sure I have all the facts before I go to the dealer with a request to replace the module at no charge.

        Thanks,
        Tony

In the US they do not replace for free. I was appauled but had to pay the $600 for the repair.

          good luck!

my '98 has about 184k on it. been driving w/the abs module out for about 60k of those miles. basically, it means you've got no abs. i haven't been able to justify spending $600+ at the dealer to fix it since the car brakes safely and normally (w/o abs.) just have to drive old school and pump the pedal on wintery roads....
although, its interesting that brickboard poster Vitor may have a fix.
              Thanks davidm!
