I have a 1995 850GLT I bought new and I just noticed that the odometer or the trip counter stoped working. This is the tradition numeric type and NOT the digital version. I see many issues about older volvos but cannot find information on how to fix this problem The local shop wants $350 to repair but I would like to do this one myself if possible. Any shared experince with this problem would be a big help.

Just had my odometer replaced when the ac evaporatotor was replaced.

The new odometer is about $200 from dealer- installation runs about $140.

I got a break on the installation since the dash had to come out for the ac work anyhow.


You CAN pull the exact mileage off your onboard diagnostics box under the hood ( believe 1-1-1 and 1-1-2)

That a good question. How do you get the milage off of the code port?
Also, the website odometergears.com said you should not order this part until you remove the existing one, I guess to be sure you get the correct part.

My question is how long did it take to take this gear out? Will this render the car out of service?

I'm willing to buy the part before I remove this if the odds are good this is the problem.

I just repaired the odometer, replaced small gear.
Mileage can be read from DCL A terminal 7
Switch ignition on
select DCL A terminal 7
push button 5 times
when LED comes on and stays on
enter first digit when LED is still on
wait for LED to go out and come on again
enter second digit when LED is still on
wait for LED to go out and come on again
enter third digit
read off response
code 1-1-1 odometer distance logged last three digits
code 1-1-2 odometer distance logged first three digits

I removed my instrument cluster as described in Bay 13 but had an odometer shop fix it for me. They charged me about $40-50. They were going to charge me more if they had to remove the unit but since I knew how to do it from replacing the bulbs, it was easy. By the way, if you have the cluster out, replace the main bulbs at the same time, they WILL burn out soon.

Buy the part from http://www.odometergears.com for $25. Install it yourself using directions on Bay13 for removal of the instrument cluster. You can use the code port on the 1995 model to read off the actual current mileage (as stored by the computer) to reset your mechanical display.

Hi there...I had the same trouble with my 850 some years ago. You can get ahold of Rick Borth at Overseas Speedometer at 1-800-444-0292 (Autin Tx). He walked me through diagnosing my "gear" problem in my odometer and I was able to send Odometer to him over-night. It was back to me fixed in a couple of days. He only charged me $100.
