Can you change the T belt on a 99 T 5? S70 1999

Have heard that the belt must be changed by the dealer because of it being a variable cam set up. Is this true? Heard a computer is necessary to do the job.

No S70 1999

model year '99 and newer engines have a mechanical tensioner that needs to be replaced with t-belt every 105K miles. Replacing the t-belt is no different than other models, but the mechanical tensioner has to be installed and positioned correctly or premature failure of t-belt leads to engine damage. No software is needed. Even ambient temp is taken into account when position the new tensioner.
The concensus here is to let an experienced master tech (the Dealer) replace both.

Thanks for the info. Am contemplating my first FWD Volvo and wondering which to get, but it will not be an S 80.

which one? S70 1999

Dick, there are plenty of '98 and '99 clean s70's out there for about $10K with low mileage.
Get one with service records and pay $100 to a volvo mechanic to check it out and go for it.

I would avoid the s80 and s70AWD.
