400 Instrument Dials.... 400

Hi People...

I was just wondering-the oil pressure and battery gauges that come on the phase 1 440's and the 480 Turbo's (identical to the boost dial), can they be fitted to a 440 that doesn't already have them? More so, a facelifted 440 like mine?? Do you reckon the wiring is already there, or do i need to do loads of work like i'd have to if i wanted the info centre?!!

Any suggestion's people....

Cheers, Dan M

Shouldn't be a big problem. For the oil pressure you may need to fit a different (or second) sensor in the engine block as now you'll just have a switch that triggers the oil light at a certain pressure.

Volt meter just wires up to the normal (switched) power connection.

Bye, Arno.

Hi Arno...

Cheers for that-but i wonder if i could trouble you again? I have cut in to the wire from my clock to connect the dials up. I have now encountered a problem though. The clock wiring is as follows: 1 Brown wire, 1 Brown and White wire, and 1 Red and Black wire. I have conected both the brown wires to the matching wires on the back of the dials, but this leaves me with the Red and Black wire from the clock, which the dials dont have.

There are two spare wires on the back of the dials-one is Green and Yellow, but i cant remember what the other wire is. When i touch the Red and Black wire on either of the two spare wires, the oil dial goes straight to maximum-the battery goes up half on one wire, and just out of the red on the other, even with the ignition switched off. Im not too concerned about getting the oil pressure to work at this stage, just interested in getting the battery meter to work when the ignition is switched on. Any ideas? Shuld i tap into a differet wiring loom?

Cheers in advance,

Dan

I suspect that the wires to the clock are:

- ground
- constant power (to run the clock)
- backlight power (when you switch on the headlights, possibly adjustable if that's in the car..)

Not sure if the colours on the back of the multi-gauge panel match with the clock wires though, so the brown wires may not be right at the moment either. (does the lighting inside the dials work?)

I'd suggest getting a switched power feed from the radio connection. If you have adjustable dash lighting then you can't use the (back)light feed for the volt-meter as it would not make sense..

I'll see if I have a wiring diagram somewhere that shows this, perhaps it helps.

Bye, Arno.

Hi Arno...
Sorry for the delay in reply-for some reason i could not open this website-it made my computer crash, but its all sorted now.

Thanks for the help so far. Would appreciate any further help with r.e to the diagrams. The backlights do light up too. I have managed to get the dial's to work, but am still unhappy because it needs all four wires to be connected, despite the fact the oil pressure is not going to be working yet (if at all).

The dial does come on when i turn the ignition though. Perhaps i should leave it at this. Im unsure if i have the time or the expertise to fit an oil pressure sensor-the ammeter works and this was the main objective due to the large stereo i have running through the car's system!

But as mentioned, if you can shed any more light on this subject, please do. Thanks for all so far,

Dan

Sorry for the late reply...

Schematic isnt' very clear, but as far as I can see there's 1 shared power connection for both the oil pressure and voltmeter and it's originally attached to fuse 19 (5A). Colour should be grey-white.

The yellow wire is for the oil pressure sender. Seems like Volvo uses a combined sender/switch, so if you replace the current switch type with this it should work.

Ground wires are not mentioned separately on my schematic, but I assume they are black.

Bye, Arno.
