Keeps stopping about a mile up the road 400 1990

My 440 injection keeps on stopping after going for about a mile. I am unsure if it is CPU problem or a fuel blockage. Where do I find the fuel filter to check it? (the car was stood up for a long while and I am wondering if there is dirt in the tank.

Can anyone help on this one please, Thanks.

Fuel filter is under the car near one of the rear wheels. It's a canister type you swap completely.

Does indeed sound a lot like a fuel starvation problem, although you may want to check the different connectors in the engine bay and perhaps disconnect them, spray some contact cleaner and re-connect.

You can also read out any error codes in the ECU by using the small black box attached to the suspension mount in the engine bay. Just pop the lid, attach the wire pigtail to hole '2', switch on the ignition, and press the small button for about 1 second.

A small LED on the box will flash an error code. The error codes are 3 digits, so 2-2-1 would be flash-flash-pause-flash-flash-pause-flash.

If it returns 1-1-1 then the ECU has detected no errors.

Bye, Arno.

Thanks Arno

Error code is 1-2-2 on the first time then 1-1-3 on the second time and 2-1-2 on the third. Any ideas on this.

Cheers

Ben

1-2-2 => Intake air temperature sensor malfunction. Check wiring or sensor
1-1-3 => Fault in wiring to fuel injectors or injector malfunction
2-1-2 => Fault in wiring to lambda sensor or sensor malfunction

I'd say, start checking those connectors and wiring and apply contact cleaner to the contacts.

After that disconnect the - pole of the the battery for 30 minutes, reconnect, turn on the ignition, check codes again (should be 1-1-1), start engine, let it run for a while and re-check.

Hopefully that fixes it...

Bye, Arno.

Arno

I have done as you said and I got the 1-1-1 code then I tried to start the car (no luck just fired a few times)and then checked again and got 1-1-3 (injection nozzle?)

I tried another ECU and got the same reading. Could this just be that fuel is not getting to the injectors? (Upon removing the spark plugs they are bone dry)

I have bought a new fuel filter to change but I can't find the location of the old one. All I can find under the R/H rear wheel arch is a long narrow (2" across)cylinder with a couple of pipes going into it but this is nothing like the fuel filter I have bought.

Thanks

Ben

SORTED AT LAST!!!!! I hope as I am just going for the test drive, mobile phone at the ready.

Found the fuel filter underneath the car but it was so rusted on that I couldn't get it off. To check if there was any fuel at the injectors I undid the nut in the engine bay and cranked it over. There was plenty of fuel getting there! But still not starting.
The problem was a connector block that sits out of sight just behind the oil filler cap and pipes etc.(didn't even know it was there). Whoever had the car before had broken the clasp on the connector and it had moved about an eighth of an inch apart, barely enough to notice but it was enough to stop the car!

Thanks to anyone who helped out, I now know more about this car in a weekend than I did about my previous car in a year.

Ben

Ah.. Good.. Lucky that it was such a 'simple' item and not a more costly item.

One of the 400's problems usually are in the electrics/electronics. It's also a good preventive idea to take a good look at the various ground-points on the car. Clean them of corrosion, slap on a load of grease and do them up again.

Should prevent a lot of strange stuff with rear light clusters, wipers, etc. etc.

Bye, Arno.
