Rear brake Pad replacement squealing terribly... 850

Replaced rear pads with ceramic from Pep Boys and they are squealing bad. Where does the paste go that came with pads. The shims have adhesive on one side already. I put adhesive toward pad. Should it be toward caliper and paste between pad and shim? I'm confused and car sounds horrible coming to a stop.

Thanks.

Definitely need to use OEM parts for brakes. Learned the hard way on 2 separate 850's. OEM or squeal no matter if you use paste.

I've got the same problem on my '97 850 GLT. It's my understanding that the previous owner did not use OEM pads. I learned that for Volvos, the rotors and pads must be replaced with OEM parts when changing the brakes.

I bought OEM pads and will be putting them in without new rotors hopefully to solve my problem.

I put the paste on both sides of the shims (I just did this). Do not be stingy with the amount of paste I went real heavy with paste.

I didn't know they had ceramic pads for the rear. Did you use new rotors? The squealing may just be from new pads on an old rotor surface, needing to break-in. I just used the shims with no paste, worked fine, but I used new rotors. The book says to grease both sides of the shim, seems kinda hard if one side has adhesive on it though.

    "Removal & Installation (Rear)"
    1) Raise and support vehicle. Mark position of wheel in
relation to hub for reassembly reference. Remove tire and wheel. Using
a 3-mm drift, knock out retaining pins. Pull out retaining spring.
Remove brake pads and shims. Use Puller (999 2917) if brake pads are
    difficult to remove.

    2) Grease shims on both sides with a thin coating of
silicone. Install shims on brake pad plates. Install NEW brake pads.
Replace one retaining pin and retaining spring, then replace other
    retaining pin and retaining spring.

I would try the paste on the outside of the shim (the side without the adhesive...) and see if that helps. Rotors are cheap though. Good luck ......

    Mike
