Rear brake Pad replacement squealing terribly... 850

Replaced rear pads with ceramic from Pep Boys and they are squealing bad. Where does the paste go that came with pads. The shims have adhesive on one side already. I put adhesive toward pad. Should it be toward caliper and paste between pad and shim? I'm confused and car sounds horrible coming to a stop.
