Emission System Service Needed S80 1999

Just got home after a 45min drive and the Check Engine light comes on with the message: "Emission System Service Needed" in my '99 S80. Any clue as to what this could mean? O2 sensor malfunc. maybe?
Can this be cleared with a scan tool in the OBDII?

Please help, I just got it almost two weeks ago with only 93k on it.

Is yours a T6? On my 2000 T6, during some (ahem) hard acceleration, the little pressure hose popped off of the dual-plastic tube thing in the center of the engine. I put it back on, and a few days later, it cleared itself.

Wait a couple of weeks and see if its followed by "ABS Service Required" & "STC Service required". A malfunctioning ABS control unit on these cars can cause these messages in no particular order & yours is about the right mileage for this fault.

just got the inspection done yesterday and got in to drive home when the ABS light came on and said "ABS System Service Required" went back in to complain. they said that it came on because the rear wheels were stationary while the front wheels were running the test and that it would eventually go away. sure enough after about five minutes of driving the light and message went away.
The check engine light with the message "Emission System Service Required" is still there though.
Karl, i'm guessing the ABS control unit seems to be working fine. but then again i wouldn't be surprised if anymore messages come up since your the third person thats told me the same story.

      will post any new developments.

I too have a 99 S80 that I just purchased from a Lexus dealership this week. It is in perfect condition with 39K. The day after purchase I had driven 50 miles and I got the same warning. I was on a business trip and after making some calls was informed it would be safe to continue as long as the performance was not suffering. I was also told to check the gas cap and make sure it was on tight. After traveling 350 more miles, I stopped to re-fuel and pressed the message button and the message cleared. I returned home and the warning did not re-appear. I returned it to the dealer to fix. It was fine for about 150 miles and now the same warning and check engine light is on. Does this sound like the same issue as Leli001 is having?

    Hi.
I don't know where you are located, but in my area, S/W Virginia
Auto Zone stores will read your OBD codes for free and also
provide you with a explanation of the codes.
    Hope this helps.
    /Thomas

Probably need either an electronic throttle module, a mass air flow sensor or an O2 sensor. A generic scan tool might clear the code if it's not a permanent fault but if it is, it either won't clear or will return soon.
The ETM is the costliest part to replace and a new one requires software to work so hopefully you don't need that.

        Carl,
Having the same issue as Lesli01, I took your advice and had the code checked at Auto Zone. It says mixture to rich (bank2). Any suggestions?
