Installing my new Rear Electronics Module S80 2000

Does anyone have a Tech Tips or Instructions for replacing a Rear Electronics Module in a 2000 S80?

Thanks again,
Dave

Don't even try that yourself because it requires software to work. You can replace the part yourself but nothing with it will work at all until software is DLd.

None of my accessories work now. I can have the dealer install the software after I install the module. Is there anything special I have to do? Do I only have to disconnect the battery?

Have you checked with the dealer to see if the software upgrade will fix your problems? If you disconect the battery for a few minutes, and reconect and rear module functions return, the software upgrade is the first step. Module failure is rare.

Yes, I took the advise from an earlier posting here and took the vehicle to a local dealer for a software update.

The dealer told me that while trying to do the update, they couldn't communicate with the module and it needed to be replaced.

I haven't heard a good thing about this dealer and they have been unhelpful and border rude. Their answers to my questions sound evasive and uncertain. Under direct questioning they unwillingly told me that I could buy the module and install it myself and bring the vehicle back to have the software installed. It makes me wonder if they really know that the module is bad.

I have tried to reset to module by removing and reinstalling the fuse.

My accessories intermittently come back on, but only for a few seconds. (I know this from watching my fuel gauge.)

Since the module has started acting up, a SRS warning has come up in my message center, the dealer said that I would be having all-kinds of electrical problems until the REM was replaced.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

          Thanks,
          Dave

I remember your previous posts here and your dealer is telling you the truth. If Vadis can't communicate with a specific module and they've tryed the few little tricks to wake it up as any tech hot line guy would suggest when called, THEN there's no other alternative but to replace that module with new SW. I've seen and heard of a couple bad REMs too but it's not common.
As for other new electrical problems since then, again they're right as with Volvo new (less than ideal) networked technolgy, when one part of that network fails or is unplugged, other new, unrelated but temporary electrical problems (messages, warnings) often show up until the main problem is cured.

Technically yes, you should disconnect the battery and let the car sit for several minutes (say 15?) to be safe before removing the REM. Be sure to mark the locations of ALL relays and shunts first to avoid adding more diagnostic costs and other possible related hassles. At the dealer, be sure to tell them what you did so that you're not wasting a techs time trying to further diagnose electrical problems. Maybe you wouldn't BUT some people do and it's additional time, money spent for the customer as the labor time goes on.
