Help with 850 purchase to finance new baby!! 850

I currently have a 1999 V70 GLT purchased two years ago. We now have our first child and I am thinking about trading for an older 850 and getting some $$ back on the deal. I am pretty sure I can give them my V70 and get the 850 and $5,000 back (I have bought all my Volvo's from the same place).

I had an 850 in the past (a 1995). Just saw a 1996 850 GLT wagon with 81,000 miles on it, not too much more than the 57,000 on our V70. Except for the interior re-style on the V70, there doesn't seem to be much difference. Anyone knowledgeable on the mechanical/construction differences? Is the suspension the same (I notice that the 850 and the S/V70 use the same anti-sway bars). Is the safety cage the same? I'm hoping there would be less electrical/nuesance problems with the 850 (the 1998/9 S/V70's have a lot).

Please provide any info you have on this.

Thanks

Check my ad in the classifieds for a 1993 850 in mint condition. It has only 71,000 miles on it, always dealer serviced with log books, it should allow you to recover a few bucks and have a reliable safe vehicle to drive the new baby around in.

    I wouldn't.

The 850 is going to be less reliable than the V70 just because it's older. Sell the V70 when it wears out.

$5000 is something you'll go on to consider a trivial amount compared to the $40,000 cost of sending your new baby to a private college for just ONE year. Trust me.

The 70 series is similar to the 850. The 850 will have a
harsher ride and probably more rattles.

The 70 series has improved side protection in the door frame
B piller, better knee bolster protection, and the steering column
was redesigned for reduced impact load on the chest in a
collision (you can easily see this redesign by looking at the
steering column parts). Oh, the 99's side air bags protect the head.
They are optional on 95s. Model year 96 through 98 the side air bags
protect the chest area but offer no real head protection in a side
    impact.

    We own a 95 855 and 98 S70. I'd keep the 70 series. Mostly because
you know its history, softer ride (although you can use the 850
to burp a baby), and slightly better safety features.

Trade down to a RWD 850

I would not trade down from '99 to a '96 FWD wagon. They are both great wagons, but are expensive to maintain as you are probably aware.

I would look for a '94-'95 940 wagon, more reliable, easier to work in the engine bay, cheaper parts, etc, etc, besides you already own a 940.

Otherwise, I would keep my '99 since I know what maintenance and what parts you have replaced along the years. The '96 would be an unknown.

    My 2 cents.

Your two cents are appreciated. The known versus unknown is important. I wouldn't want to spend have of the $5,000 on repairs for the 850.

Related to the other post on repossesion, luckly we own the V70, so would have no payments on the 850 either.

Still interested in the technical/performance differences.

Our first child was 9 months old before we finally go her paid off. The good news is that they don't repossess your kids when you get behind in their payments.

on the other hand... i have a 1994 850 turbo charged wagon with 125,000 miles... there was a leak (a hose leak to the turbo) which i had repaired under warranty... this car is in great shape my independent mechanic said... but i'm fastidious for these and i did them immediately-- oil change, coolant flush, brake and transmission flush, and a complete going over hoses, thermostat, et cetera... there can be good older models out there- i was lucky to find one so well maintained...

good luck with your decision, and the baby!

      best,
      belle
