I hereby nominate this to be the inustrial-country-problem of the week.

    The other nominees are:
    * I have to many remote controllers on my livingroom table and never finds the right one when I want to switch channel.

Continuing in this spirit of sarcasm ...

Permit me to offer a solution to your channel-changing dilemma: get up and walk to the TV and change the channel .... like we did in the 50s.

I am firmly convinced that the invention of the remote control was largely responsible for the fattening of America ... not to mention ADD resulting from endless channel surfing. It was bad enough that we sat on the sofa for hours on end watching mindless drivel; then some genius found a way for us not to have to even get up to change channels. Is this a great country or what???

Correction - Am I the only one to find that the cupholders aren' t deep enough? S70

Sorry, I seem to have hit the send button by accident before finishing the message.

I get the feeling that any cup that I will put in the cupholders of my new '99 S70 is likely to topple over because the cupholder is too shallow...

Is it my imagination or does anyone have any suggestions?

    TIA,

    R

It is not your imagination and I do have a suggestion:

The previous owner of my '98 V70 T5M removed the little spring loaded "thingy" on the bottom, which defines the depth to which a cup may be placed. He did this only on the front hole of the 2-hole holder.

Now the front hole works wonderfully with those travel mugs which have a step diameter increase about 2 inches from the bottom. However, don't try to use it for those cups which have a gradual (non-step) increase in diameter, e.g. a McDonald's styrofoam coffee cup, or it will wedge itself into the hole and guarantee a spill as you try to remove it. That is why you do not alter the rear hole in the holder; you can still use that one for such cups.

          Hi Rob,

          {You asked: How do you remove the thingy?}

          The Glib Answer: Verrrrry Carefully
Second Glib Answer: Ask my dog; she managed to break one off very cleanly on my other 98 V70.

          Sorry ... couldn't resist.

First of all, I didn't remove mine; the previous owner did, so I don't know how he did it. I know what I would do, but some procedures defy verbal description, so I thought an image would be more instructive. However, there is a KB limit on placing images here, so I would be pleased to send it to you off-forum. Just e-mail me at:
          dave.spriggs(at)cox.net
and I will shoot it to you.

            Dave,

Thanks for the picture. Some very gentle prying with a medium-sized flat screwdriver did the job. I installed a plain round cupholder with double-sided tape next to the handbrake, precisely under the opening of the original cupholder and voila, I can now have a bottle in there without it spilling all over.

            R
