Throtlle Control Module disassembly guide V70-XC70

Hi all....

Following a request from another Brickboard reader I've photgraphed and documented the process of completely dismantling the TCM for 99- Volvo S70 and V70s.

Only read this if you accept full responsilbility for doing this and accept that this is only a document detailing how I did mine. The first time I cleaned the TCM it lasted 15000 miles, but the second time it seems the wear was too great and it wouldn't resurrect again...

Feeling brave? http://www.rally-photos.co.uk/volvo/tcm

alastair, one quick question, out of curiosity. If one replaces the 1999 on fly-wire TCM I assume one must have the unit re-cabibrated by VADIS?
thank you for a very well write also.
cheers

Thanks BJ,

Unfortunately yes.....

Mind you... When I succumbed and bought a new TCM I bought it from the part$ department, lifted the bonnet and fitted it myself while in their carpark, then went through to the $ervice department and gave them the keys to do the reprogramming. In the process I saved about 2 hours labour charge$......

And given they quoted 2 hour$ to do the work and I only took 20 minutes....makes you think doesn't it...

alastair, thank you for info. Now the V70 is going into semi retirement and ol'
sweetpee senior (our '67 122s wagon is going to used liked it used to be, just about every day for local trundeling). again SU's are very forgiving and can be rebuilt for $30.00 for the two, usually every 100k or so.
Thanks for your efforts Alastair, I am sure there are many brickboarders following this thread.
cheers---

Alastair,

Well done! It appears the circuitry (pic 1019) has some corrosive water damage? Is that what im seeing?

Everyone who has the ETS problem should view these findings to better understand what is actually failing. Also, for those who arent as mechanically inclined your local Volvo shop should be able to clean the throttle body for around $150us.

Again, thanks for taking the time to inform all of us in the ETS club!

Hi Warren,

Thanks for the message. No that isn't water damage (its all in a sealed box...). I suspect from memory it is just a bit of silicon sealant gunge / thermal paste from when I pulled it apart. Note that when Volvo 'clean' the TCM they do not pull it apart like that but merely spray the bejesus out of it or soak it in a bath of cleaner in the hope they get the gunk out. I suspect if you have access to an ultrasonic cleaner you may well get a pretty decent result by soaking it in an deep bath of cleaner. Volvo also give the venturi area and throttle plate a good clean.

Alastair
