time to replace my timing belt S70 1998

I just hit 70,000 on my 98 S70 and I've scheduled my t-belt replacement. Is it a good time to change the water pump? Any other components that should be replaced?

time to replace my timing belt S70 1998

I just replaced timing and aux belts today. Car has 210,000 km and this is second t-belt change. My hydraulic tensioner and water pump is still OK, no need to replace. And the rumors about blowing your engine if tensioner were to fail are just urban legends. Tensioner has a white plastic "pac-man" washer that will prevent it from total collapse if it's installed as per Volvo instructions.

Read 'T-5 timing belt damage' on this board! S70 1998

You will be glad you did!

    It all depends.... S70 1998

Early '98s have the old, 850 style 70,000 mile TB with the hydraulic tensioner. Late '98s have the 105,000 mile belt and mechanical tensioner. (For car serial numbers use the Brickboard search feature above.)

At the first 70k TB change the consensus is to just change the belt, and only the tensioner or WP if they're leaking. The consensus is to change the tensioner and idler pulley at the second, 140,000 mile belt change. Again, the WP is only changed if it's leaking.

With the 105k belts the mechanical tensioner must be changed with every belt change.

If you plan to keep the car.. S70 1998

For another 70K, I would insist they replace the tensioner if its the hydraulic style. Check your VIN like Ray indicates. My buddies 98 S70's hydraulic tensioner blew at 78K miles AFTER VOLVO DID THE 70K BELT CHANGE!!!! It was a major fight but he got volvo to swallow the $3500 bill for head damage! Its money well spent. Probably another $100 tops!
