Electronic Climate control faults on 1997 855 T5 850

We had really hot weather here yesterday and I ran the AC all day.
This morning the REC and AC lights started blinking on my ECC unit When I started the car. It did it twice (each time I started the car) and then not the third time. I know that the manual says that I should take it in for service, but I was wondering if there is anything I can check myself.
Thanks

      Hi-
ecmiller is my brother, I'm working with him on this, trying to help him read the codes the way you describe in your post. I assume the codes are read simply by counting the LED flashes?

I've got 2 questions for you about the process-

      (1) What is the pushbutton switch to Pin 5 for? When do you push the button?

      (2) What position must the key be in to read the codes? Engine running or not?

      Many thanks-

      KR

This link shows how to read codes using the pre '96 engine compartmet sockets:

        http://www.volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.htm

The push button/led replicates the one fitted to the old sytem so you use it the same way.

Push button for about one second to read codes
The codes will be flashed on the LED.
        Note it's slow.

Key position is II engine not running
