Water Leak on floor after heavy rain S80 2001

Hello,

My 2001 S80 Volvo is my first Volvo. I really like it.

However, we had very heavy rains this week down in Florida.

When my wife took the kids out for lunch, after the car sat in the rain all morning, one of the kids in the back passenger side, noticed water splashing out of the vent tube underneath the drivers seat. They had not driven more than a 1/4 mile or so when this occurred.

Any ideas what would cause this or how to prevent it?

I just bought the car a week or so ago and this is our first time out in heavy rains. I have not yet gotten an owner's manual so we are figuring out everything by trial and error.

Thanks for the help.

You have many places that can allow water in: the windshield, the sunroof, and the fresh air vents can allow water into the climate control unit. However, since it is only the passenger side, and since it was coming from the actual vent for the air conditioning, and since we've also been running our air conditioners in sunny, humid Florida, I would look for a clogged AC drain first. I have four cars at the shop right now for this same problem. The afternoon deluges make it rather hard to dry carpets.

Chris,

Thank you for the reply - I may have not been clear - the water leak was on the driver's side - I would guess that the your reply would still be applicable for that side as well?

Thank you again - I appreciate your help.

Pete

Had one come in today. The rubber seal for the fresh air vent under the cowl (when you recirculate it closes a door here) was actually "inside" the airway keeping the door/flap from closing, and allowing much water in. I'm assuming someone when putting in the filter pushed the seal off if it's home.

Ummmm....nope. Is the entire floor wet on the driver's side? Front and back? Is the passenger side wet at all? I'd be leaning towards cleaning/clearing my sunroof drains. Let me know.

Chris,

Thank you for your help.

The water leak is still very heavy, despite lack of rain for a couple days. Any chance water is trapped in the body and sloshes out during driving?

Or is it a/c condensation - it appears to come out of the vented tube underneath the drivers seat, even when it is not raining. The inside of the tube is wet to the touch, as far down as I can stick my fingers in it.

Thanks for the help.

Also check the screens for the drains under the hood just below the windshield. If they are clogged with debris water could enter the ventilation system.

Larry,

How do I do this?

Thanks.

Pete

Pete,
Open hood. Check the two side screens at the end of the plenum cover under the windshield. Mine often fill with debris.
