? about vent hose into ECU box V70-XC70

When we bought our '01 V70 T5 a few weeks ago I noticed that the vent tube going into the ECU box was missing. Asked the sales guy who checked with the service manager who said some cars had the vent tube while others had a fan inside the ECU box. Took the car to a local dealer to get some other things taken care of and they said that ours had the fan inside the box and they put a plug over the hole where a vent tube would go. This weekend I looked in the box and saw no fan.

Without a fan, how important is this vent tube?

Some cars use the wire outlet tubing at the bottom of the box to ventilate. THe fan is hard to see and is hidden in the firewall side of the box in the piping from the cabin.

very important to cool the ECU's.

Unplug that vent, buy the plastic hose that connects to the top of the radiator area and restore the air flow to it.

According to the service rep, Volvo changed the fan to the radiator and there is no inlet for the vent hose.

My car originally had the vent hose, there was some recall or something and the fan to the radiator was changed so there is no inlet for the vent hose. Newer models have a fan in the ECU box to keep it cool.

Something is wrong with this picture.

Something else is wrong with this picture!!

If the ECU is susceptible to buildup of heat, how on earth is the Throttle module expected to survive fastened to a hot casting, and in the airflow path of air coming from the radiator and associated heat exchanger devices???? No wonder the damn things fail at 50,000 MI!

Anyone here read recently the article by Jamie Kitman inside back cover of Automobile magazine entitled " Crapulent Luxury"? He makes a good point..these aggressive manufcturers are wanting to introduce the latest electronic gizmos to beat out the competition, but at the same time, go to the least costly vendor, and don't invest adequate time to debug the software, and all the interactions among electronic gizmos in the same vehicle! The example in an earlier issue about the trip computer in a Jag X-type telling the driver she was in the middle of Lake Michigan was so much fun! But then I don't own an X-Type!

Maybe I own the wrong type of car..the earlier Volvos were so good! As Kitman said in that same article..he drove to Michigan in a High-performance Mitsubishi..not a luxo-barge, but it got him there with no warning lights on the instrument panel shining at him,

          The perfect volvo V70-XC70

You're right, the more electronic gizmos the more unreliable the volvo.

The perfect FWD volvo would be one with a manual sunroof, manual transmission, manual gas door, manual climate control, manual cloth seats, the red B230 engine from the 240, the ABS module from the 940 series and the AC system from any american car.

          Any takers out there!

If there is a cooling fan in the ECU box, then I wouldn't worry about it. BUT

If there is no cooling fan, then unplug the vent, buy the plastic hose that connects to the fan shroud, then make a small hole in the fan shroud to connect the hose and you'll be set.

Do it ASAP, you don't want to overheat and cook the ECU during the heat of the summer
