How to test engine mounting 850

Hi all

Describing a noise is not easy, and so I understand why no one replied my post.

Anyway, my narrowed down guess is the engine mounting, I believe there are four at the bottom of the engine, so which one is the bad one?
Visually I cannot tell which is which. Is there any way to find out if an engine mounting is bad?

Thanks

The subframe mounts will leak as a sign of failure. The mount on the right (passenger) side down inside the wheel well (with the inner wheel well liner removed you can see it) will sag and allow metal (presumably the bottom of teh engine)to metal contact that will cause significant vibration.

Up top, the torque bushing (attached from the top left side of the engine to the firewall) will also fail. This will allow the engine to rock back and forth and will cause premature failure of the other mounts also.

There may be others, but these are the only one's I can describe.

Anyone else?

BB

Thanks V70baseboy.

Are you saying that the engine mounts contain liquid?

The torque bushing is visually OK. I don't feel any vibration but I'm sure you are right about the vibration as represented by the noise. The noise heard only when the car pulls and gone once it rolls. The noise also heard on rough roads as clunks.

Mine is European model, so your passanger side is driver side. Yes I can see the one that you are talking about, but I still can't tell if it is bad or not.
There seems to be a connector between the front subframe and the transmission next to front engine mount.

You're hearing a clunk on rough roads? Actually, that doesn't sound like a mount at all. It sounds like the sway bar end-link.

I'm thinking, probably not "liquid" in the true sense of the word, but some sort of viscous matter that is in a "thick" liquid state. I believe that
www.volvospeed.com has instructions on the lower "driver" side mount. Check them out in the repair/maintenance section.

How to test engine mounting 850

Hi all,

I have replaced the torque mounting at both end, the one that is hanging on the firewall and the other end that is on top of the engine. The one that is hanging on the firewall was the bad one, while the one on top of the engine was replaced because it was incorrectly installed. There is an arrow marking on the rubber, and it was pointing forward which according to the mechanic should point upwards.
And the result is that the noise when the car pulls I've been complaining has gone, but now new louder noise heard when idle plus vibration. According to the mechanic, the noise came from the lower engine mounting.
I have not replaced the lower engine mounting yet for it takes dismantling the subframe...

If you mean the right side (in the US model)hidden behind the wheel well lining, it is a lower motor mount, and you would need to suspend the engine to remove it, no subframe dismantling

I have replaced the side engine mounting, and the brick rolls silently as before...

Thank you all... case closed
