I fully disagree with Ben: The S60 is a very good car. Yes, I have a MY 2001 too and there were a lot of small things to be fixed by the dealer. The car driving trouble free now. I do not have aby electrical problems (okay bulbs last about one year, which is short).

The car handles, drives, accelerates and is silent in a way far better than any of the 200, 700 or 900 series. It is a new generation of cars. The engine is much more sophisticated than the good old B200F and B230F. Build quality is very good. When introduced in the 850, it was mentioned that no non-regular service is expected for at least 250k kms.

I'm happy with my S60 and the dealer should be able to fix all your 2001 MY problems, else get a better dealer.

regards,

Dutch

Todays vehicles inlcudes more electrical systems than ever before.
Due to this, the alternator have to charge the electrical system "harder" around 14.5 Volt to remain a good battery capacity and load balance. Bulbs are made for 12V which can not handle the higher voltage that good. Unfortunately there are no 14.5 V bulbs on the market.
Volvo have developed a resistor cable kit which recudes the voltage to the bulbs, and the lifetime will be longer. This kit was introduces in production maybe from model year 2002 (I am not sure exact introduction time).

If alarm go off randomly then it is defective and has to be replaced. Sometimes alarm sensor is too sensitive, but at 2AM and if noone is near the vehicle then I think its more defective than too sensitive. Also note that some microwave ovens leaks, and if vehicle is parked close to kitchen, then the alarm may go off. Wireless TV transmitters may also cause false alarms since they use microwave band as well.

problem with the electrical with the 2001 S-60 S60 2001

As you might have gathered, todays Volvos are NOTHING like the durable, (almost) trouble-free cars of the past. They're seriously over-complicated thus prone to electrical problems.
Realize that the headlamps are normally on all the time (unless you have them switched off via Vadis, dealer) so they don't last as long as other cars.
The alarm problem could be a sensor related problem but it often takes a very good, dilegent (motivated) tech to go through the efforts of trying to duplicate the problem and finding a bad sensor, IF that's the problem. If a dealer can't duplicate your concern and if there are no fault codes stored, it's nearly impossible to know why you're having a problem.

ben, now i know that the older volvos are true volvo and the new volvos are just a ford. i hate it. here is my question to you. you seem to know alot about these new volvo, is it worth keeping this S-60 seeing that i have already had 2 electrical problems with less than 46,000 miles on it. here one more question, how do you feel about the 940 non-turbos, i can pick one up,1991 940 with 111,000 miles, for $800. it need shockes and brakes, tuneup, timing belt, just all the little mantenances on a older volvo. it drive good, run fine, interior fair, nice body.i dont think i can go wrong with one that low of price. i want to thank you for the help on the s-60. now, want are you building or parting out? what do you drive? keep in touch, kim richardson
