wood trim removal to replace console gear light S70

Okay, here we go, my first post on this board.
I have an S70, happily driving my 98 with 210k km.
I want to replace my gear shift (AUTO) indicator lamp which is below the gear shifter.
I have read instructions at volvo-speed.com with complete confidence but I have come accross an obstacle.
After removing the two screws in teh glove box it appears that the wood trim finish is interfering with the removal of the console assembly.
The length of the trim exceeds the length of the console which is attached (by glue or snaps?) to the ashtray portion as one length of trim.

TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
----------- -------------------------------

Please help.
Also looking for a good knowledgable mechanic in Toronto/Okaville/Mississauga.
Canada.
Do I make my self clear or should I upload a picture of the problem.

Good timing! I have mine apart right now for some re-work. Did you remove the "ashtray" and find the two fasteners in there? Also, you may have a coin holder aft of the shifter? If so, that just pops out and then you can get the tray out that is directly behind it. Including the trim for the e-brake, there are actually 5 pieces involved. Good luck!

        ingstprt,

        WHOA!

Unless your car is for the European market, you:

        1. Remove the two fasteners under the access panel.
        2. Remove the handbrake cover by pressing down slightly and sliding it to the left. Then slide the boot over the handle to remove completely.
3, Disconnect the two harness connectors found underneath.
        4. Pull the sides of the console away at their lower front edges ( where they overlap the center stack section) to release the clips.
        5. Move the gear selector to the middle position and lift the console up and out of the car.

If for the European market, you may have two fasteners holding the front in. You can remove the coin holder by pulling it up in back and look to see. Most likely though the console has a tab that slides into a slot in the front w/o additional fasteners.

You DO NOT have to remove the wood trim to remove the console.

Let me know if you need further info.

        Bryan

Would you please describe me in more detail about what tools I need to perform these tasks? Remember, I've never had a volvo or performed these tasks before.
I need a clear definition on procedures. How do I remove the ashtray?
          Thanks for your patience.

            inqstprt,

You really need to get the Haynes Manual for the 70 series. It costs about $25.00US and is available from IPD, the Haynes website and probably at your local Barnes & Noble.

You only need a 9mm socket to remove the bolts under the access panel below the armrest. No other tools are needed unless there are either bolts or torx screws visible in the front through the coinholder opening. Remove the coinholder by pulling up from the back. It will easily release and lift out.

Pull back and up on the console after you have removed the bolts, disconnected the harnesses and released the front edges. If it does not move, then you probably have two fasteners in front under the coinholder/tray combo.

My car was built in January of 1997 in Sweden and uses the tab-in-slot design to secure the console in front. There are no screws. YMMV.

Don't force ANY plastic parts. Volvo's plastic formula seems to produce particularly fragile components.

            Bryan

My V70 has two torx fasteners that hold the front trim just under the ashtray (you can remove the coin holder with a small flat screwdriver and then pop the tray out behind it. If your car is anything like mine, there are two torx fasteners holding the front of the console trim, just under the ashtray. My car was made (assembled) in Belgium in Feb of 1997, but is not a euro spec model, as far as I know.

Remove the ashtray by opening, pulling toward you and slightly upward.
