Vibration from exhaust V70-XC70 1998

I think I have something loose or cracked. When I start the car I get a sort of small bang sound. It is similar to when the muffler bracket broke on my Saturn, when the car was started the muffler would jump and land on the rear axel.

I also get a vibration in the steering wheel when idleing. When coming to a stop I can hear something from around the passenger side. I think the exhaust manifold runs to the passenger side then to the center to the cat. It's hard to see anything.

Any idea where I can look for this problem? No codes are set yet so I do not have a oxygen sensor reading high or low to a crack, I hope.

    RayJ......your symptoms V70-XC70 1998

sound similar to mine and it was the lower right motor mount AND the upper bushing motor mount by the ditributor were both BROKEN!!!!!!! I thought it was a CV joint cause on sharp left turn I heard/felt a wobble sound......it was actually the motor torquing up and moving around. Just try "shaking" or moving your engine from up top....mine with the 2 broken mounts was "easy" to move. Replaced both with mounts from FCP and she's now as good as new! God Bless the USA!!!

I was concerned about the CV joint myself because I just had both boots changed on the right side. I'm going to check that motor mount. I'm not familiar with the upper bushing motor mount but if it is by the distributor I should be able to find it. Thanks for your help.

Check the motor mount on the passenger side, behind the crankshaft pulley. The rubber often cracks, causing the metal part of the motor mount bracket to come in contact with the metal subframe. Volvospeed.com has instructions for replacing the motormount in the Bay13 maintenance area.

The upper motor mount (actually it is a torque rod) at the top of the engine fails quite often also.

Is the upper motor mount the same as the one by the distributor cap as described by "masher" ? Thanks.

        Ray,

yes, the upper engine mount connects the engine to the firewall, and is located on the same end of the engine as the distributor.

I also have a 98 V70 (108kmiles)and recently replaced the upper mount, which was obviously cracked, and the one beneath the crank pulley, which was worn but not broken. I got both from FCP Groton. For the upper, I used the neoprene aftermarket type. I agree with others that it transfers a lot of vibration to the steering wheel, but it's mostly only noticeable at idle. Both are DIYs.

Try jacking the car and tapping along the exhaust with a rubber mallet. You may have something loose inside like a piece of the cat broken off etc. Usually you can locate it like this. I had an exhaust rattle on a 740 that drove me nutts trying to find. Turns out it was a loose bolt where the the exhaust bolts to the manifold.
