Transmission problem 850 1995

Transmission problem on my wife's '95 850. The tranny started "acting funny" and left her stranded. Engine runs but there is no output to the transmission. The car does not move in forward or reverse. The Check Engine light was triggered and I pulled the following codes from A1.
1-1-4 : Program selector open circuit or short circuit to supply.
1-2-4 : Mode selector fault or short circuit to ground.
3-2-2 : Incorrect gear ratio.
2-3-2 : Speedometer signal missing.
I cleared the codes and swapped the Mode Selector switch with a known good one. The car started to move a little and then the Check Engine light came back on. When it was able to move, I could move both forward and backward just a little - then nothing.
I pulled the codes again from A1, this time got just 2-3-2. Does not appear to have anything to do with the Mode Selector switch.
Where do I start troubleshooting the "Speedometer Signal Missing" problem or is that require specialized equipment?

Thanks in advance.

    Wintermode problem 850 1996

Hi. I have a guy willing to sell me a Volvo 850 cheap, but he says he's had a nagging problem with the wintermode switch coming on periodically, making driving off impossibly slow. He's taken it to several shops, which have changed out plenty of parts, but the light keeps kicking on and he has the same problem. One of the shops said that he has only cleaned the mode selector switch rather than change it. A dealership told me they've had to change a number of those on the same type of car until the computer and switch linked up. Could you please help me understand what the problem could be? Please post your info here, but also email me at jim.schoettler@jacksonville.com

    Thanks, Jim

And you checked the fluid level right?

The 2-3-2 code refers to the vehicle speed sensor located at the top of the tranny on the driver's side measuring readings off the differential. It could be dirt and grime blocking a good signal for the sensor or as mentioned before a burned or shorted wire, or maybe an actual bad speed sensor. But when the signal is not recieved the transmission should still operate in "Limp" mode and move the vehicle (although in third gear with no converter lockup...). Has the car been wrecked before or the transmission removed? If you put the front end up on jackstands and run the motor can the transmission spin the tires?

Probably just a fried wire. Follow it from the tranny back up to the top.
