850/V70 Rear Hatch Strut Replacement

The rear hatch on our 1996 850 Station won't stay open. I assume there are struts or springs which are now worn. How do I get to this/these item(s) for replacement? And how long should the job take, 10 mins, 30 mins, 2 hours, etc...?

Thanks,
meb

      850/V70 Rear Hatch Strut Replacement

If you buy the genuine Volvo replacement struts, they are about $50 (or more) each. I bought my struts from FCP for half the price. The only downside was that these aftermarket struts had a much higher gas charge. Consequently, when I replaced both, the tailgate swung up with too much force. My solution was to use one new strut, and leave one old one in.

I later found that the Pep Boys stocks the OEM brand (Sachs/Stabilus) at a more reasonable price than genuine Volvo.
