I know there's some switches involved in this but what would be the most likely cause for being stuck in PARK. The key is in the ignition, the parking brake released and the brake peddle is depressed but the shift lever won't budge sometimes. I have a '95 with just under 100K miles. If I engage the parking brake and release it a few times and also reinsert the key a few times it has released so far but I don't want to wait too long.

Depress the shiftlock override button just to the forward right of your shifter. That will release the microswitch manually.

you're correct, the microswitch is busted and you need a new one.

You need the remove the center console to get aat it. Easy DIY job.

Thanks for the advice. I think I saw this procedure in Volvospeed. I'll give it another look.

I had a 95 Ford that had the same symptoms and it turned out to be a small switch on the brake pedal. It prevents you from starting the car unless the brake pedal is depressed. Look at your brake pedal a see if there is a frayed wire on that little black switch. Also spray it with cleaner. It's worth a try.
