Can I just live with a broken door stay mount? S70

The driver door stay mount that commonly breaks loose on 850/S70s has failed on my 1999 S70. It appears that instead of just the spot weld failing, the entire section of metal on the A-pillar has broken almost all the way around the mount--in other words, it appears that the weld did not fail, but the piece of metal the stay is attached to failed. Thus, it doesn't look like I can do the "bolt repair" that is commonly recommended.

When it finally breaks completely free, will I still be able to open and close the door? In other words, if I can live with the noise, can I just live with the broken stay door mount? Thanks.

Can I just live with a broken door stay mount? S70

My '98 S70 had the same problem. The noise made when opening and closing door was not only annoying, but embarrassing, especially in parking garages where the sound is greatly magnified. Always causes passers - by to take a second look.

I took it to my local body shop. They initially tried to spot weld the hinge to the A Pillar. This did not hold. Luckily, my guy is determined and ended up putting a solid weld completely around the entire hinge, where it meets the pillar. It has held up, and is just like new. (1 year)

The weld looks like a quality job, and I hope to not have this happen for quite some time.

I do not know if letting the hinge break from the pillar will cause any harm, but it was worth it for me to have it diagnosed and repaired. The cost was around $150 US.

James.
