Rear Seat Belt Replacement V70-XC70 1998

1. I had a friend get out of the car, leaving a passenger seatbelt extended to the point where it was on the ground. Not knowing this, I got in the car and proceeded to drive away. The belt got caught under the right rear tire, tearing it in half. I have a new belt, but the instructions say I have to remove the seatback and leather upholstery to get to the belt assembly. Is there an easier way to do it or it that the only way?

2. I had the plastic part break off the oil dipstick. I have a new redesigned dipstick and tube for my car. Do I have drain the oil before removing and replacing the dipstick. Don't wanna oil mess all over the place. the '70 is running and looking great at 118,000 miles.

Thanks Brickboarders,

Ron

Confused? V70-XC70 1998

Removing the rear seat back is a matter of unbolting it from the car. Why do you have to remove the leather?????
The C pillar coverings need to come off, but no leather there.

As for your dip stick: If the tube is longer than the dip stick (it shouldn't be) then you will spill oil. Remove the old tube and it's dip stick and put in the new one.

Confused? V70-XC70 1998

This is based on the instructions that came with the new Volvo OEM belt. After the seat back comes off, the upholstery has to be removed to unbolt the inertia reel from the seat back, diagrams provided. For cloth, hog rings join the fabric at the bottom of the seat back and have to be removed to take the upholstery off. For leather its a zipper. The other end of the shoulder harness bolts to the C-Pillar.

See? I never sit in the back seat so I haven't the foggiest idea where the belt loops through. I am glad you have leather, zippers sound like more fun than Hog clips!
BTW, watch out for front pass belts. They have a tendancy to stay in the door frame and break the red warning light. I was able to glue my light back on.

Rear Seat Belt Replacement V70-XC70 1998

1. Seatbelt.
Yes that is the onbly way to do it.
Once the rearseat is off, it is straightforward.

2. Broken dipstick.
I personally would not worry becasue the plastic part that broke off will sit in the oil pan anyway. The oil pump has a screen so it is very unliekly that the plastic piece is sucked into it.
You might want to use an electrician fishtape to wiggle around the bottom of the oil pan to see if you are lucky enough to fish it out.

Rear Seat Belt Replacement V70-XC70 1998

OK on removing the upholstery from the seat. I'm studying the instructions right now. Probably won't get to it until this weekend, God willing.

What is the name of those special pliers used to remove the upholstery clamps? I saw a post about them but I forget the tool's name and I definitely know not to get it from Volvo.

I'm guessing since the uphostery is leather, I'll be unzipping it from the bottom of the seatback. Volvo wants to charge me three hours labor at $89/hour to do it. I don't think so. My indie shop won't even touch it.

The dipstick broken plastic part is the part that you pull out. Before I pull the stick and the tube from the oil pan to install the new tube, I just want to make sure oil won't start pouring out of the dipstick hole.

Thank you

Red alert......why............. V70-XC70 1998

go thru all the hassle on the oil dip stick! If you have the pieces just get some super glue or JB weld to fix. OR........look in your local junkyard for a keeper!

"If you have the pieces just get some super glue or JB weld to fix."

If yours breaks, sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

"OR........look in your local junkyard for a keeper!"

Don't see too many late model Volvos in junkyards around here.

Red alert......why............. V70-XC70 1998

OK, I got the seatbelt changed without removing all of the upholstery. I was able to remove the rear seat curtain holder and the right side corner protector. Using a ratchet, socket and short extension, I was able to work in the small space to remove the old torn seat belt. Now I have another problem. I can't get the new seatbelt to extend. I'm talking about the right rear shoulder harnesss on a 98 V70. So what am I doing wrong, or is the belt defective?
