I have a 5-speed, so I need the parking brake. It has been working fine until the other day when I returned home from work and it did not work. No gradual fading, just working fine (4 or 5 clicks to hold) and then not working. I tightened the hex-nut in the centre arm rest but it did nothing. Does this mean I have to remove the back wheels and tighten the shoes or am I missing something?

Shoes have most likely seperated from the backing plates. Common problem over time. Had the same happen on my 99 S70. (5 speed)

Now you will have to return to the setting you used to have under the console. Unless the cable broke, the pads and hardware broke. The only way to figure out what is really wrong is to remove a rear caliper.

probably the shoes have seperated from the backing. New aftermarket around $25
