parking brake mystery 850 1996

I have a 5-speed, so I need the parking brake. It has been working fine until the other day when I returned home from work and it did not work. No gradual fading, just working fine (4 or 5 clicks to hold) and then not working. I tightened the hex-nut in the centre arm rest but it did nothing. Does this mean I have to remove the back wheels and tighten the shoes or am I missing something?
