Has anyone had to remove the center console from a 2001 S40? My cigarette lighter pushed through its opening, and it seems as if the only way to retrieve it is to remove the center console. Any help would be appreciated.

Just went through the sam problem.
- Remove the trim around the gear shift handle (pops out)
- Undo 2 screws that separate front part of console to the back half.
- Open CD storage cover. On the bottom is small rectangular cover that hides 2 more screws.

Your plastic lighter holders are likely broken. Some epoxy glue shoud fix the stuff.

pull out the radio[no need to disconnect the wires, as you will loose the code]
you will then see two retaining screws that hold the lighter/ashtray unit in place.
