intermittent starting problems 850

I have a 95 850 turbo. Sometimes when I try to start the car nothing happens. The dash lights come on but its like their is no juice to the starter. When this occurs I just keep trying and trying until it finally it will start. Its a pretty new battery. I am not sure if the starter is going or if there is a connection that tends to corrode or something else. Has anyone else had this?

Thanks

Just another data point. I have a 95 850 5 speed, 115k. Same symptoms, gradually got worse taking more turns of the key to get it to crank. Indy said it was the starter. After replacement all is well.

If 'rowing' your gearshift helps, then your pnp switch will need to be replaced soon. If you keep turning the key to pos III a lot until you get starter contact, then it is the switch plate behind the key - easy to replace.

How can I find out if it is the switch plate or if it is the starter?

        Ready,
The switch plate is behind the key, inside the clam shell cover around the steering wheel. Once the cover is off, you will be able to see the switch plate. When it wears, you will have a hard time reaching the start contact and at times the on contact. Wiggling the key in pos III might help determine if the contact is going bad.
If it is the starter, usually the soliniod(sp) goes bad. That gives the starter juice. With the key in pos II, ground the soliniod with a long handle screwdriver and the starter should engage. If that is the case, get a new starter.
If there is no juice at the starter, the pnp switch neds to be replaced.

That is all I know, I know no more. Lots of luck,

          Klaus,
Did you really mean to write "GROUND the solenoid"? I think you are talking about "shorting" or connecting briefly the solenoid input to the large positive lead at the starter to test the starter/solenoid.

sorry about the last reply - starts when cold 850

The car starts when cold. Should I replace the whole starter or is likely to be only a part of the starter?

      Thanks

I doubt it is the starter, but I had mine rebuilt by a small auto electric shop that rebuilds starters and alternators for dealers, service station mechanics, indies etc. Not very expensive and they did the labor too. I would not get one from the dealer.

That said, I think you should try putting it in and out of gears like switching it from P to D and back then try to restart, and pushing the PNP switch as suggested first. Some people have had problems with ignition switches too. Don't have to heavy a load of keys on your key chain. I only have the fob, car key, house, and office key on mine.

You may also need to thoroughly clean the ground on the body in front of the battery. Also make sure the battery connections are clean and secur

I have a 96 850T and have the same problem now and then--usually in the AM after the car has been sitting all night. Just wiggle the shifter or push the unlock button to move the shifter more. Starts right up. Probably early stages of PNP failure or just a little moisture or corrosion on the contacts...

Try putting it in neutral and see if it will start. Basically only three things will manifest the symptoms you describe. Loose, funky battery terminal; pnp switch; starter. Often times cold or wet weather affects the pnp switch. Starters usually fail when they are warm, like after you dashed to the store, and return to the car 5 minutes later.

    Hope this helps,

    Chris
