engine cutting out when ticking over. S70 1989

If I sit with my engine ticking over for any length of time 5 to 10 minutes it splutters and dies. When I try to start it ,it refuses. I have to wait untill it is cold before it will start. I've sprayed all electrical components with wd40 but it still stalls.
it's been serviced ,new plugs etc.Can any body think what could be causing this behaviour. i'm new to volvo's,never expierienced this problem with other cars that i've owned. HELP!

Sit with engine ticking? you mean running? I'm assuming...

So basically, your car will run for about 10 minutes, and then sputter and die. If you wait, you can start it again, and it will run for about 10 minutes, then sputter and die...

If I am understanding you correctly, my first "guess" would be engine coolant temp sensor. If the car, as far as the engine management system knows, never "warms up", the car will continue to run at a full rich mixture. This eventually saturates the plugs and then you have to wait for them to dry out again. Of course this is just a "guess"...

    Hope this helps,

    Chris
