Just wondering -- how much to replace thermostat?

I just got a quote from the dealer of around $140 to replace the thermostat on a 1998 S70 (the guy said it is roughly 1.5 hrs labor). I then called an indy shop that I used in the past and their cost is around $35. He sounded like it was an easy job (not needing a lift, etc). Naturally I got an appointment with the indy.

I am not much of DIY but I was just wondering why the huge discrepancy in price? How easy a job is it really?

Thanks!

I did it myself in about 30 minutes. The thermostat and gasket were about $8.

I replaced it because temperature wasn't increasing as fast as it should. It can also fail to open and the engine will overheat. The thermostat is always in line with the upper radiator hose and attached to the engine. The Haynes manual will provide a picture.

    Hi Brian,

Dealer probably included completely emptying and re-filling the system with the Volvo proprietary coolant, which is a rip off. Also may include replacing the ECT sensor, just below the t-stat. Tell the indy you want that done as well, as it is a good idea when replacing the t-stat to also replace the ECT. After you tell the indy that, ask how much the price will be then. Will probably hit $70.

$35 seems a little low, but maybe not.

Thanks, BB. Do you happen to know how long does the job usually take? I believe the dealer goes by what they call a 'book rate'? 1.5 hours seem to be a little long.

      Thanks again.

Just depends on how long the coffee and donut breaks are! DIY time is about 1/2 hour when it is warm outside.

Thanks! I had a feeling it wasn't 1.5 hours or more like the dealer said. I even asked the service rep if the job included flushing the coolant and he said "No, Volvo does not recommend changing the coolant anymore" was his reply. Hmmm ... 1.5 hrs?

          Thanks again.
