S70 Performance models? S70

Hello!

I am a new member to this forum.

I am a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast by heart, but have always been a Volvo fan for years. I currently drive a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D Turbodiesel, and a 1996 C280 Sport. I am looking for a car to use as a daily driver, and have always wanted a Volvo 850R sedan. However, I like the slightly updated and smoothed out styling of the S70 sedan...

My question is as follows:

Did Volvo sell a performance version of the S70, say an S70R or T-5R in the United States?
And if so, how common is the bronze/gold color? Its my favorite color for the S70, and I can only imagine how happy I would be if I could locate an S70R or T-5R (if made) in this color. I am in no hurry to find the car, so I will defintely be willing to wait for the right car to come up for sale, as I know that finding a very specific model of any pre-owned car takes time.

Thank you for your time, Happy Motoring!!!

    S70 Performance models? S70 1998

I fully understand your desire for a performance S70. Mine is a 1998 S70 T-5 with 90k miles and it's been a good car. Last year I took care of a long list of cosmetic and technical repairs and improvements which cost over $4k.
The S70 is a strong daily driver and a durable car. To enjoy the performance and safety of these cars you will need an operating budget. However, my vehicle has already been depreciated, so the cost of repairs still looks like an inexpensive way to motor around.

I plan to keep mine for as long as I can keep it looking like new!

You will pay under $10k for a used 1998 S70. I suggest you keep a couple of thousand in hand for repairs...and you won't have a problem.

One important note...you will need a good tech to help you. My local tech drives the same car as I do and we compare notes often. Without him, my S70 would be a less attractive proposition.

    Clive.

If my memory is not totally wasted, the S70 came with the T5 package, the V70R has the same engine but more standard goodies. So you are really looking for a gold S70 T5 1998 or earlier. Don't buy 99 or 00 models.
Sport suspension, wheels, IPD exhaust, perf chip, would all be extras...

I would agree...No 99 or 00 model. I love my 99 and will drive it till it dies but have sunk $4500.00 into over the past 3 years. Still nothing like driving a Volvo...they are fun

Over 3 years? That's all of about $125/month.

I've easily spent that much, too ... including tires, brakes, routine maintenance, cosmetics, etc. I'd say it's almost as good as a Camry except I know I'll jinx myself for a $$$$ repair if I say that, so I won't.

The '98-'99 SV70 T5 5-speed manual and the HP ("high pressure") turbo C70s with the 5-speed were the quickest Volvos available in the US until the current 300HP S60R and V70R 6-speeds. The "old style" '98-'00 V70R had more HP but it was AT only and that was coupled with the frictional losses from the AWD system. The 850Rs were AT only and were nicely equipped with a different front bumper/spoiler, Alcantara (synthetic suede) seats and 17" wheels.

SORRY guys! Just getting used to using the format of this forum. If I mess up or post 2 of the same posts again, i FULLY apologize... prolly is a little annoying.

At any rate, II just did some searching online, and I found a pic of a "Gold" S70, but its not the color im looking for. The color I ideally want is I guess more of a "Bronze". Bear with me here, im a little color blind. The color I want I know for sure was offered on C70 coupes... and theres a pic of an S70R in the brickboard gallery that is exatly to my liking. I guess I can try attaching that pic to this thread.

I just got my catalogue of accessories from IPD, and needless to say im droooling over all of thhe stuff they offfer.... Im looking forwards to future Volvo ownership to say the least. It will be nice to save the C280 for pleasure and still have a fun car to use daily.

KlausC- I noticed that you have a 164 in your stable.. How do you like that car? Its probbabaly one of my favorite vintage models by Volvo...

At any rate, if annybody knows the name of the color im looking for, let me know. Look forward to reading more info about these cars! I have included a link to the excat color and model I want...Looks like its an S70R, which I guess wasnt sold here, but a t-5 with some mods should do. esp. love the wheels and front air dam!

Just looked at the link of a car that you posted.

I laughed, it was pure reflex - sorry ...

But in general, I'd say get a titanium (pewter) color. It has that golden hue mixed in somehow. At least, you won't look ridiculous ... :)

The color you are looking for is ... the world's most expensive spice ... comes from the pollen of the crocus flower ... arrg! Damn memory! SAFFRON!!!
I have only seen this color on V70Rs in the USA.

I like my Aztec bronze 164E and next week it will have brakes and I will be able to drive it! Previous owner let it sit at his mother's house for over two years without running it, let me have it if I promist to make it run. I love the body style and the 3liter straight 6.

              HAHAHAHA Saffron!!! :)

I too love the 164 Bodystyle!!! Before I got hooked on the ol Mercedes Turbodiesels, I was considering a 1974 164E in that same color as you have, and it had a new black leather interior.... if i remember correctly it had 134K miles, and was being sold by the original owners next of kin, and it was in quite nice shape (california car)....See alot of them running around still here where the weather is decent year round. One guy down the street has a powder blue one.. wonder if hes a member of Brickboard.... Definitely think those cars are drop dead gorgeous, and I love the design of the rear seat seat-back.

Thanks again for info on the S70.... who knows what I'll end up with, but I do know it will have some IPD mods, and definitely 18" wheels.... too bad Heico Sportiv doesnt make body kits for the S70!

Ive also been eyeing the new S40 T-5.... any words on that one? good/bad? being relativley new, I would think that they have some issues being the first year of production, but theyre VERY nice cars I think. I have also thought about waiting a year or so to get an S60R..... who knows.... I may even get another W202 (1994-2000 body) C280, but not sure.

I do really want a Volvo though. Somthing a lil different than what im used to.

              Cheers!
