Heater Core Fog Issue - Any Quick Fix? V70-XC70 1999

My 99' XC has all the symptoms of heater core death (the smell, the fog, the loss of coolant, the agony). I'm going to have it replaced next week, but in the meantime I can't see out my windshield! It's winter, I drive 70+ miles a day, and I can't be sticking my head out the window like a dog the whole time (no offense to dogs).

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I can do in the interim to at least see what lane I'm in? I tried Rain-X antifog windshield cleaner, but it actually made the problem worse.

Add some Bars Leak to your rad. It will seal the core leak until you get it replaced. They make about 6-7 types which are light years better than the old pelleted crap of yesteryear. The stuff is harmless to your cooling system but if it bothers you being in there, it'll be flushed out when the core is replaced anyway.

Is Bars Leak the brand or the product type? The folks at my local [autozone-partsplus-pepboys-etc] are, well, not exactly geniuses.

Bar'sLeak is the product name. Common auto parts store product. see this:http://www.barsproducts.com/index1.html

My guess is you can add a can of this and forget about replacing the core. The stuff is good

          Not likely.

The way these cores tend to fail is the end-tanks pull away from the core itself, which is not like the pin-hole leaks that Bars-leak is best used for.

This core is a miserable design that is bound to fail on every series I 70-series car out there, eventually. (I'm put my second replacement core in at 65k miles -- that's a new core every ~30k miles!) I'm not sure if the 850 uses the same core, but they might have to watch out for this too.

I know you're frustrated, but the only fix is to replace the heater core. If you can't get it repaired sooner, then borrow/rent another car.

    The truth hurts sometimes. Sorry.

Whatever you do, do it soon and don't use the heat until you do.

If you have the heat on at all, most likely in addition to fogging your windows you are also breathing in anti-freeze vapors. Imagine your lungs being coated the same way your windows are...
