Ticking sound at startup and then smooths for a while. then I noticed that it comes back at low rpms, can tell at high rpms. Is this likely the oil pump seals? Should I start by pullling the pan in replacing them?

Thanks

Travis

i had the same ticking noise about 2 years ago. i flushed the engine with a good engine flush, and never had them again to date. i guess the cleaner did a job on sticky valves or something

Volvo engines have hydraulic valve lifters and they do make a ticking noise normally on startup - it even says this in the owners manual of most of the models that I have seen. If it goes away after a minute or so I think you are fine. Of course it is hard to describe these "noises" over email! Why not start up another similar Volvo (at a dealer, friend's car...) and listen and compare the volume and length of the noise?

Use the Volvo/Mann oil filters because they have a good valve to prevent the oil from all draining out, allowing better protection at start-up. Cheap oil filters may not do this.

Ocotillo here i posted this last night as guest claiming to be (forgot password). Like I said it's a louder than norm ticking at cold start then decreases to normal when at operant temperature but I notice it returns at lower RPM and idle intermitantly. Does anyone think I should start by replaceing the oil pump seals?

    Thanks

    Travis
