another ticking thread 850 1994

Volvo engines have hydraulic valve lifters and they do make a ticking noise normally on startup - it even says this in the owners manual of most of the models that I have seen. If it goes away after a minute or so I think you are fine. Of course it is hard to describe these "noises" over email! Why not start up another similar Volvo (at a dealer, friend's car...) and listen and compare the volume and length of the noise?

Use the Volvo/Mann oil filters because they have a good valve to prevent the oil from all draining out, allowing better protection at start-up. Cheap oil filters may not do this.
