Cleaning throttle body V70-XC70 1999

Does anyone know of a service manual or website that has instructions for this?

What is the reason you are trying to clean the throttle body? Because the idle has gone "bad?" Seems to run rough at idle? Trying to prevent the infamous Fiat throttle body from becoming defective?

The fact is that cleaning a throttle body won't solve anything. Your car is equipped with a Fiat throttle body that has a dangerous design defect. At some point your engine will die. Little or no warning. Car must be towed/limp in to the closest dealer. $950-$1,200. to replace the Fiat throttle body with another Fiat throttle body.

The new part will be as defective as the old part. You will go for probably 50,000 mi. and the engine will die again. No cure.

Volvo's Technical Service Bulletin ("TSB") on cleaning a throttle body doesn't work. Dealer's know this so they don't advise spending the money/time to have it done.

Sorry for the negative post but you need to understand that the defective Fiat throttle body cannot be fixed. Volvo has refused to recall the '99 and later cars, re-design the part and fix the defect.

Volvo's "Customer Care" Dept. (a true misnomer) says you should expect the problem because a Volvo is a "sophisticated car." (?)

Cleaning throttle body V70-XC70 1999

The vehicle has 100,000 miles on it. I have experience with NA engines where the crankcase breather hoses, flame trap, throttle body, become dirty/clogged. I figured that the plumbing for this car could at least be checked for proper operation. However the Turbo uses different components than the flame trap and the throttle body is motor driven instead of throttle cable driven. I like having quality instructions when tackling a project. I certainly would not want to ruin an expensive part.

So far I have learned: (1) that the motor part of the Electronic Throttle is a weak link in the car. Cleaning the throttle bore itself will not help the design flaw in the motor; (2) If I attempt to clean the throttle body, I probably should remove it from the car, and use a new gasket to reinstall it; (3) Some of the old carburetor cleaners can be harmful to the O2 sensors or catalytic converters (I forget which), so I need to be careful to use the right throttle body cleaner.

But I still haven't found any real instructions. I will have to purchase a copy of VADIS soon, as I hope to keep the car and service it myself.

This site shows flame trap cleaning (removal down to throttle body) and EGR (past throttle body). I used the EGR instructions to get the throttle body off and then clean it with carburator cleaner and pipe cleaners (get all the holes clean).

Well I did the cleaning on a '94 850 so it may have a different part. There were small holes that attach to little hoses, they were completely clogged with gunk. Sorry I did not take pics and can't really describe... just examine yours carefully when you get it out and make sure all holes are clear!

I HOPE YOU DONT USE CARB CLEANER ON A 99 XC OR ANY 99AND UP MODEL AS THIS WILL DISTROY THE UNIT, ALSO I HAVENT SEEN THE CLEANING DO MUCH GOOD!( EVEN WHEN DONE PROPERLY WITH CORRECT CLEANER! )
I WOULD ADVISE YOU NOT TO ATTEMPT THIS IF YOUR NOT A TECH! GOOOOOOOOOOOD L U C K

the correct cleaner is Cleaner H, which can be purchase from a volvo parts dept. It's a really strong solvent, safe for electronics and leaves no residue. I've used a high quality throttle body cleaner with good results. I wouldn't clean it unless it was a turbo car and even then, I'd just replace it with the new style, but only a dealer or someone with VIDA can do the download to activate it.

Is it not just a metal part like in the 850?
