heater core 850 1994

My heater core went and the mechanic disconnected it about three weeks ago. He says I should wait until I plan to replace a/c because of the cost involved and the two parts are so close together. Meanwhile, the starter has started acting up. Any possible connections between the lack of a working heater core and thes starter?

Here is a link to a detailed and pictured replacement...

From this - even if you or yours do not do the repair yourselves, you will be armed with an exact knowhow of the procedure when you talk to a mechanic...

If you did not get the link, the addy is http://www.volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=9717&hl=Jeater

Hi 850 FLA girl.

Find another mechanic, the heater core is accessed though the panels uder the dash ahead of the shifter console. The a.c evaporator requires total removal of the dash board!
If you have the heater core done at a shop it will be a couple hundred depending on the hourly labor rate. An a/c evaporator will be around $1200.
No, I do not think the heater and starter are related in their problems.

Thanks. He made it seem like it would cost about the same to replace that as it would my a/c evaporator. He charges $800 for that job. npel

In Dec of 2003, I had to do same... cheapest place then for parts was eEruoparts.com

BTW - you will need two new O Rings (which I got at FCP at the time along with another order)

#3545586 Heater Core O-Rings (x2) around $2 each

This seems to be a fairly common problem, so I would bite the bullet and go new on the parts. I can't remember if I followed online instructions, or Haynes, but it was pretty straight forward and simple - not too invasive.

Good Luck

Your starter problem may be due to the PNP switch going bad. Only if you engage the starter and nothing happens. Try cleaning the PNP contacts by rowing your shift lever from R to L about 20 times the next time the starter will not engage. That tempory fix should give you a couple of months to save for a new PNP.

No conection between heater and starter. Heater core is NOT a major operation. Takes about 2 hours if you have instructions. Dealer techs do them in about an hour. Dash does NOT have to be removed to do a heater core.

Thanks. I may price it at the dealer. Also, I have a used engine. It came with 93,000 miles. My ODO says 197,005. So, do I need to get a 100,000 mile check because of the engine or get a 195,000 miles check.
