98 V70 Ignition switch replacement V70-XC70

Hi:

Looking for some help/advice.... I have '98 V70 with a degraded ignition switch. Occasionally (slowly getting worse), car won't start as if there is a 'shift-lock' issue. If I wiggle key in ignition, car starts. Issue is also observed with occasional headlights/dashlights being out. Again, wiggle key, bam - back on.

Thus, I wish to replace ignition switch. I called dealer to get estimate and it is $510 for parts and labor. My Haynes manual shows replacement process taht doesn't seem that bad. I plan to call dealer thaat sells Volvo parts at discount for parts pricing.

Has anyone done this job before and can you buy correct part from dealer without needing specific key part?

thanks!

PW

There is a recall on the ignition switch, that will cover it's free replacement, provided you are the original owner. I don't think it extends to the subsequent owner, unless purchased at the dealer's lot. But I could be wrong on that detail.

Could you let us have more detail on the recall? I had my ignition switch replaced by the dealer at my expense.

You dont get a new key, you get the switch plate that is behind the keylock assembly. $500???? There are 4 hex screws to remove the plastic cover around the steering column and then you can see the switch plate. 2 or 3 screws is all there is. Check Volvospeed.com/maintenance, they have pics.

Is there a recall on 2000 s70 ignitions , if so why? I'm having intermittant starting issues and sometimes see a small spark when I put the key in. May not be grounded very well. Should there every be a spark?

That small spark could just be static that you carry into the car or generate while sliding in the seat.
Call your local friendly dealer and ask about the recall. Usually, I get the best answers when I talk to parts than to the service team. Probably because the parts guys know my name...
