Power doorlocks broken V70-XC70

Was quoted big bucks to repair my inoperative power doorlocks on my '98 v70. Both front and rear passengerside locks no longer operate remotely. I think they broke when someone was tugging to open them while I pushed the all open remote controller. Any cheaper fix available. Was quoted about $200 per door in parts. Yikes!

It is possible that just the driver side is bad. Unfortunately, the only way to verify this is to pull of the door panel, regular pain in the butt.
Vitor has a nice write up on fixing the little red tab, but it is quite a procedure. Do a search on Vitor. And go to Volvospeed to get pics on removing door panel. Easily 1 hour of time for a good mechanic.

Fairly common problem - kids pulling impatiently on the door handle while you press the unlock button on the keyfob - been there, done that...

It's not terribly difficult to replace the lock mechanism yourself. Here's a writeup:

This writeup also describes a fix for the old lock - the problem is usually a little red plastic tab that breaks off - but I wouldn't bother with this - looks a bit unreliable. You can get the lock mechanism new for less than $100 if you shop around. I got one from this Volvo dealer selling them through eBay:

IMO, $200 per door quoted by dealer is reasonable *if* that includes the labor to install them. Sucks, but it's the price you pay for conveniences like central locking.
